Community batteries are being rolled out across WA and already play a vital role in supporting local energy needs. But they can do more than keep the power flowing.

As a business owned by the people of WA, we believe our infrastructure should reflect the communities it serves. Rather than leaving them as plain enclosures, we see each battery as a canvas to tell local stories, celebrate culture and showcase the unique spirit of a place.

Your council is part of the next rollout, and so it’s your opportunity to shape how the battery looks and how it reflects your local character. To make it easy, we’ve narrowed the choice to three design options:

Option A - painted battery

Local government led; artist paints directly on battery

  • Artwork applied directly onto the battery.
  • Local Government leads artist selection and concept development.
  • Enagage community and cultural stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Local Government manages procurement and installation with the nominated vendor.
  • Artist develops concepts and applies final artwork in line with requirements.

Option B - localised decal battery

Local government led; artist designed decals applied to battery

  • Custom decals produced and applied onto the battery.
  • Local Government leads artist/designer selection and concept development, engaging community and cultural stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Local Government manages procurement and installation with the nominated vendor.
  • Artist/designer develops concepts, prepares print-ready files, and collaborates with the vendor on panelling and alignment.
  • Council/artist liaises with the nominated print/installation vendor to confirm print specifications (media, laminate, anti-graffiti coating).

Option C - standard decal battery

Western Power led and designed; decals applied to battery

  • Western Power supplies and installs a standard decal treatment to the battery.

Approvals for localised designs

If your council selects Option A or Option B, submit an application outlining your concept, artist or designer, and proposed materials, through our Artwork on Assets process.  We’ll review and provide any guidelines needed to ensure designs are safe, suitable and ready to progress.
