Distribution loads & large generators
Learn about the connection process, requirements and key considerations for large load and generator projects.
Connecting a large load or generator to the network is a significant piece of work, and knowing what to expect makes it easier to plan. We’ll work with you through every stage, from first enquiry to energisation.
The information below applies to:
- large distribution-connected generators (≥1MVA)
- large distribution-connected loads (≥10MVA)
- large distribution- connected generators (≥1MVA) coupled with a distribution load
Connection process overview
In the enquiry stage, we identify a suitable network connection option so you can assess your project’s feasibility and prepare a Connection Application. Depending on your requirements, you can choose either a Capacity Check Assessment or a Connection Options Assessment (COA).
To start an enquiry for a new connection, or to change an existing connection point, you’ll need to complete and submit an enquiry form via the MyWP projects portal

Once your enquiry is complete, the next step is to submit a Connection Application.
The subsequent stages of the process, from initiation to execution, are currently being developed.
We use your completed application and preferred connection option to run network studies and identify any network constraints. We also review the initial environmental assessment and community engagement considerations, based on the proposed line route.
With the confirmed scope of work confirmed, we review protection assessment requirements and develop a concept design and technical solution. This informs the Class 4 estimate for the work needed to meet your project requirements.
We begin the design work needed to connect you to the network. We then prepare the business case and Access Offer contracts for the final technical solution.
This final stage involves completing everything needed to energise your connection. This includes finalising the detailed design and completing the procurement, construction, and commissioning under the terms of your Interconnection Works Contract (IWC).
Once construction and commissioning are complete, your new or modified connection assets can begin operating under the terms of the Electricity Transfer Access Contract (ETAC), and we can formally close out your project.
