Cervantes tourist hotspot – the Lobster Shack – is powered-up and ready for the summer crowds thanks to an upgraded network connection from Western Power.

The popular and expanding restaurant and business had been relying on generators for its increased power needs.

Western Power Distribution Customer Manager Lauren Adams said the team worked with the Lobster Shack’s owners to map a new 800amp grid connection to suit the site’s needs.

“We are proud to support regional communities and work with our customers to deliver the right power connections for their homes and businesses, safely and effectively,” she said.

“This upgrade required a detailed design and the installation of a new 1000 kVA 33 kV substation, two pole replacements, network reconfiguration to allow for the new supply and new high voltage and low voltage cables to supply the substation.

“The end result is reliable power supply that will give peace of mind to this important community business and support its future growth.”

Lobster Shack owner David Thompson thanked Western Power for working with his team to find a solution to their power problems.

“We run a restaurant, lobster catching tours, and lobster processing facility, so a reliable power supply means smoother days for our staff and visitors and a strong tourist season for Cervantes,” he said.

“We’ve grown every year, but power was always tight and we had to rely on generators, which are costly, noisy and tough on equipment.

“Now that the new connection is in, we can spend less time juggling power and more time serving people: it will be a load off our mind, especially through summer.”

Each year, Western Power processes more than 6,200 grid connection applications - from residential homes and small businesses to critical services like hospitals, schools, and major infrastructure projects. These connections play a vital role in delivering broad benefits to the community.
