A new renewable energy milestone has been reached with Western Power issuing network connection offers to a further two large-scale renewable projects in the past financial year.

Overall, seven new generators were issued with network access offers in 2024/25 including battery energy storage systems, and wind and solar farms that will bring an additional 759MW of clean energy onto the network.

The Access Offers clear the way for these projects to begin construction and are the culmination of months of collaboration between project proponents and Western Power.

Industry plays a pivotal role in enabling the expansion of the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) transmission network - essential in supporting WA’s decarbonisation goals and driving economic growth as we progress toward net zero.

Western Power Executive Manager Energy Transition and Sustainability Matt Cheney said the issuing of these offers marked the start of grid connection works, a key phase in customers' project development journey.

The latest projects include:

  • Merredin BESS – 100 MW: large-scale battery jointly developed by Nomad Energy and Atmos Renewables - the system will connect at our Merredin Terminal on the 132 kV line bolstering reliability across the eastern Wheatbelt.
  • Waroona Renewable Energy Project – 120 MW solar + 80 MW battery: Frontier Energy’s Stage 1 solar farm and battery will produce clean energy to power around 67,000 homes.

“Over the past year, we have been building a clearer picture of where renewable investment is likely to occur, future load forecasts, and project readiness,” Mr Cheney said.

“Looking ahead Western Power’s pipeline of connection-ready projects as of June 2025 is 12.81GW.

“This highlights our collaboration with industry, and we’re proud to partner with our customers to bring new capacity onto the SWIS safely and efficiently.”
