Western Power apprentice Matthew Haylett has defied the odds and walked out of hospital this week following a tragic accident at Mullaloo beach six months ago.
Colleagues at Western Power’s Balcatta depot today celebrated Matt’s progress with a Guard of Honour and team lunch.
Western Power Operations North Manager Derek Sutherland said Matthew’s progress was an extraordinary example of true resilience and a testament to his determination.
“Matthew’s injuries were significant and the fact he’s now walking is a tremendous achievement,” Mr Sutherland said.
“Matt has shown incredible strength and determination throughout his recovery so far and he’s a true inspiration to all of us at Western Power.
“The team here have been supporting Matt in his recovery and heavily involved with fundraising, helping to raise nearly $50,000 dollars via his GoFundMe page.
“We wanted to honour Matt’s progress so far and recognise the resilience and determination he and his family have shown throughout this incredible ordeal.”
Matthew said he felt privileged to be part of such a supportive and encouraging community at Western Power.
“The Western Power team have been a wonderful support to my family and me during my recovery, visiting me in hospital and supporting my GoFundMe,” he said.
“It really is a great community and I’m looking forward to rejoining the team when I’m able.”
Mr Sutherland said Matt was a valued team member and an inspiration to his colleagues.
“It was fantastic to have Matt and his Mum Megan join us today and we’re really looking forward to seeing him continue his recovery and welcoming him back when he’s ready.”
In March, Matthew dived into the ocean and hit a sand bar taking the full impact on his neck causing a severe C5/C6 spinal injury paralysing him from the neck down. After undergoing spinal surgery, he spent a month a Royal Perth Hospital where doctors told him that he may never walk again.
Matthew regained some feeling in his arms and legs and was transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital to undertake a full rehabilitation program – his rapid progress amazing his family, hospital staff and Western Power teammates.
