We’re committed to protecting and conserving WA’s unique environment while operating a reliable and sustainable electricity network. A key initiative in this commitment is our nest box program, designed to provide safe nesting and shelter opportunities for native wildlife in areas where natural habitats are limited.

What are nest boxes?

Nest boxes are purpose-built shelters designed to mimic natural tree hollows, which can take decades to form. These boxes help support local fauna by providing vital spaces for nesting, shelter, and breeding. Our program includes six types of nest boxes, tailored to suit various species such as:

  • Small and large mammals (e.g., possums and phascogales)
  • Small and medium parrots (e.g., Carnaby’s cockatoos)
  • Vertical and horizontal nesters

How we build and place nest boxes

Working alongside The Re-Cyc-Ology Project, employees participated in hands-on workshops to construct 25 nest boxes using environmentally sustainable materials.

Before installation, our Environmental Policy and Programs team conducted detailed habitat assessments to identify the best locations. These assessments ensure the boxes meet the needs of local species while avoiding pest colonisation.

Nest box locations

So far, nest boxes have been installed at key sites, including:

  • Northern Terminal (Malaga)
  • Jandakot Depot
  • Guildford
  • Martin
  • Oakford
  • Kemerton

These sites were chosen based on a combination of ecological value and proximity to native habitats. Many are home to, or near, known populations of native species such as black cockatoos, possums, skinks, and phascogales. By integrating conservation efforts into our depots and operational land, we’re supporting biodiversity in the places where we work every day.

Monitoring and conservation

Monitoring is critical to the success of the program. The team:

  • Conducts regular checks to ensure boxes are being used by native species
  • Relocates unused or pest-inhabited boxes to more suitable areas
  • Monitors four boxes equipped with live-feed cameras, enabling us to observe and share real-time footage of the wildlife using them

Excitingly, Brushtail possums, ducks, and brush-tailed phascogales have already been observed making use of these shelters. We look forward to expanding our monitoring efforts and sharing more success stories.

Collaborating for a brighter future

The nest box program is a collaborative effort, made possible through partnerships with organisations such as The Re-Cyc-Ology Project. By working together, we’re creating opportunities to protect and conserve WA’s native fauna for generations to come.

This program complements other conservation initiatives, including:
