Legal Counsel - Permanent Full-time – Perth, CBD 

 

 

At Western Power, our Legal, Governance and External Relations Business Unit plays a pivotal role in delivering essential corporate functions—ranging from legal services, compliance, and internal audit to strategic external communications and stakeholder engagement. We also provide critical support to our Board Directors and Executive Leadership, ensuring strong governance and accountability across the organisation. 

 

 

We are currently offering a rare opportunity for an experienced and motivated Legal Counsel to join our Legal Services team on a permanent, full-time basis. This role reports to the Managing Counsel (Head of Legal Services). In the Legal Counsel role, you will provide high-quality, practical legal advice across all areas of Western Power, ensuring our operations, business strategies, and policies are executed with strong legal risk management and in full compliance with all legislative and regulatory obligations. 

 

 

Your Role in Action

 

  • Provide high quality, practical and timely legal advice across Western Power’s operations, including safety, HR, property, commercial, regulatory, litigation and claims management matters. 

  • Provide legal input and support on key strategic projects at Western Power. 

  • Prepare focused briefs for external legal counsel and collaborate effectively with them, including on litigation matters. 

  • Support the integration of external legal advice into internal processes and compliance regimes. 

  • Ensure compliance with Western Power’s legal and regulatory obligations through sound risk management practices. 

  • Review, draft and negotiate a wide range of contracts and documents, including participating in negotiations with third parties. 

  • Educate other business units on legal concepts, including changes in legislation and how to mitigate legal risk.  

 

 

What Makes You a Great Fit 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Law from a common law jurisdiction. 

  • Admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of WA and holding a current practising certificate. 

  • Significant demonstrable expertise and broad knowledge in a broad range of legal matters including in respect to: electricity and/or energy, commercial contracts, construction law, compliance and policy, employment, property or disputes. 

  • Organised, with the ability to cope with and prioritise large volumes of work and to work effectively under pressure both autonomously and in a small team environment. 

  • Excellent legal analytical negotiation and presentation skills and experience. 

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to provide practical advice by applying legal concepts to a commercial business. 

  • Demonstrated commercial and business focus. 

  • High level of integrity and professionalism and the ability to manage stakeholder relationships.
