Surprise renovation rescue for Seaside camp

Timing is everything, and for the caretaker of Rockingham’s Alfred Hines Seaside home for people with disability, a renovation rescue of the grounds could not have been better timed.

A transformation occurred last Friday in and around the holiday accommodation for children and adults with physical or mental disabilities, three weeks after caretaker John Cooke suffered a heart attack.

“The timing was perfect,” he said. “I recently had a heart attack and am due for heart surgery. In one day (the volunteers) did what would have taken me a month.”

Painting, clearing, weeding, installing wooden barrier posts and tackling maintenance challenges along the way, the renovation rescue was performed by a team of passionate volunteers, who, in their day job, are managers from Western Power.

“The concept is great, there should be more corporate bodies (doing this type of volunteering). I couldn’t have been more satisfied. The end product was amazing, the amount of work that they did was remarkable,” John said.

Western Power’s Community Engagement Specialist Thuy Acacio says, as a customer oriented business Western Power employees want to make a contribution to the communities the business operates in.

“Western Power and its staff fundraise for a number of charities but adding the opportunity to do hands-on volunteering gives employees so much extra satisfaction. We always get a great response from staff when we ask for volunteers to lend a hand somewhere.

“At New Year 5 of our staff volunteered at Alfred Hines to help the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association with their disabled water sports day so we already knew the facility could use a bit of help to improve the grounds and buildings.

“We made the offer to John to hold a busy bee at Alfred Hine and he enthusiastically gave us a list of tasks which we were very happy to do. It was totally coincidental that the work was scheduled just when John was having health challenges,” she said.
