Perenjori: From blackout town to energy innovation crown
Blackouts have been all too common in the small Western Australian town of Perenjori.
The Mid West town sits at the end of a long stretch of powerlines which are exposed to a range of environmental factors.
A problem anywhere along this long line could cut power to the town.
Fast forward to 2017 and battery storage technology is now a reality.
Perenjori is at the forefront of innovation thanks to a 1MWh Battery Energy Storage System that has been installed on the outskirts of the town.
The system is comprised of lithium-ion batteries with an inverter. It kicks into gear instantaneously if the town loses supply from the main electricity grid.
The battery backup system is expected to reduce outages by 80 per cent.
