Work to start on Waikiki substation

Release Date: 20 November 2006

Better quality and a more reliable power supply is just around the corner with the start of work in late December to construct a new substation in Waikiki.  Construction of the substation is essential to meet the growing power demands of the Waikiki area, which is increasing by 11% per year.

The Waikiki substation must be completed by November 2007, when it is predicted that the existing Rockingham substation will reach capacity.

The West Australian Planning Commission has approved the construction of the new substation at the junction of Safety Bay Road and Read Street, Waikiki.  The site chosen has the least environmental impact on native flora and fauna and was recommended by Sinclair Knight Mertz (SKM) in an independent assessment carried out last year.

In August 2005 Western Power appointed Sinclair Knight Mertz (SKM) to evaluate five sites in Waikiki for the new infrastructure.  The undeveloped land at the junction of Safety Bay Road and Read Street was recommended because:

  • The transmission line that will connect to the substation is immediately adjacent to the site, meaning no additional lines would need to be constructed to connect it to the electricity grid.
  • The site is centrally located within the area that requires the power.
  • There is minimal environmental impact at this site, where as other sites have significant threatened ecological communities and a major conservation wetland.
  • The land at this site was available and approval could be obtained relatively quickly, meaning the project would meet the required deadline of November 2007.
  • The site will not affect rail development or other infrastructure.
  • The site provides a significant area to be used as a landscape buffer.

Western Power's Environment and Land Manager, Rudy Teh, said that the State’s booming economy was significantly increasing the demand for electricity and the demand for new connections.

"The rise in the number of developments has produced an extraordinary amount of growth in the demand for power.

"Waikiki substation will help Western Power maintain an efficient and reliable power supply to the area well into the future."
