Second stage of community consultation starts

Release Date: 31 August 2006

Western Power's series of public information sessions on the proposed transmission line between the Muja power station near Collie to Wellstead, 90 km north-east of Albany, form part of the second stage of its six-month community consultation program.

The sessions in Borden, Kojonup and Broomhill provide landowners affected by the proposed line, and other members of the community, an opportunity to talk to a range of businesses involved in the line’s development.

Western Power invited representatives of mine operators Grange Resources Limited to be present at the information sessions. Grange Resources is seeking environmental approval for its proposed magnetite mine at Wellstead. If approval is granted next year construction of the transmission line is expected to be completed by 2009.

Mr Ian Buchanan, Major Projects Coordinator at Western Power, said the public information sessions were an effective way to engage all interested community members.

"These public sessions and the consultation process Western Power has been conducting with affected landowners give community members the chance to individually ask questions and to have input in the development of the proposed line route," he said.

"The sessions give community members an opportunity to speak to representatives from Western Power, Grange Resources and Landcare Australia.  A landscape architect is also present to provide direct information to the public on the visual impact of the proposed transmission line and possibilities for screening it from view.

"Western Power continues to be mindful of the environmental and visual impact issues associated with this project.  We are keen to work with the community to get the best possible location for the transmission line," Mr Buchanan said.

Western Power is currently six weeks into its six-month community consultation process.
