Muja to Southdown transmission line Flora and Fauna Survey

Release Date: 16 November 2006

In the first week of November Western Power commenced a Flora and Vegetation, Fauna and Dieback Survey.

The survey will cover the full length of the proposed line route from Muja to Southdown, including both line route options that run north and south of Gnowangerup and is required to guide the sustainability assessment being undertaken.

Environmental management consultants, ENV Australia Pty Ltd, will conduct the survey on Western Power's behalf.  Directly affected residents have been notified by Western Power of the need for ENV to gain access to their properties.

Western Power Major Projects Coordinator, Ian Buchanan said that Western Power's aim was to minimise the environmental impacts of the proposed transmission line.

"The information we gather will also be included in a referral document for the Environmental Protection Authority to assist it to determine the environmental impact of the proposed line.

"In most cases, the success of a survey is determined by its timing. As part of the EPA guidelines, Western Power is conducting this survey during the spring months when the majority of the plant species in the area are flowering, fruiting and have foliage that enables identification", he said.

A decision on the final route will not be made until all surveys have been conducted and affected stakeholders have been consulted.

Western Power's website will continue to be updated with information on this project.
