New connections
The following information only applies if you need a new connection. If you are moving into a house with existing power that just needs to be activated, you need to set up an account with an electricity retailer.
To apply for a new residential connection, a standard supply needs to be installed on your property. The new connection will be underground, regardless of whether there is an overhead network in your area.
Your electricity supply will be connected to a pillar or ‘green dome’ located on your front boundary close to the neighbouring fence line (see diagram below).
One pillar is shared between two properties unless there is more than one dwelling on the property.
Underground connections are compulsory if you are:
- demolishing and re-building
- building on a vacant lot
- sub-dividing
- upgrading your supply
How to apply
For standard connections (one to three dwellings), complete the online domestic underground supply application form online.
Note: For strata developments, unusually large homes, or those running heavy-duty or three-phase equipment, you will need to consult an electrical contractor to determine your power needs and to complete the online design and quotation application form.
What happens next?
- Set up an account with an electricity retailers
- Provide the account number to your builder or electrical contractor who will arrange the connection (see step 4)
- We will install a pillar inside or adjacent to your property boundary connected via an underground cable to the nearest power line
- It is then your responsibility to arrange for your builder or electrical contractor to install an underground consumer main cable between the pillar and the meter box/premises
How much will it cost?
Connections are assessed and quoted on a case-by-case basis. However, you may be eligible for the subsidised pole-to-pillar rate.
Additional charges may be incurred in the following instances:
| Type of fee | Service | Current cost |
|---|---|---|
| Network service fee | New overhead standard supply - approved cases only | $550 |
| Network service fee | Connect underground consumer mains to pillar | $450 |
| Part payment arrangement fee | Charged for changes made by the customer to the normal payment scheme offered. | $550 (inc GST) |

| Administration fee | An administration fee may also be charged if the job is cancelled or changes are made after construction starts and/or any costs are incurred prior to cancellation or scope change. | $550 plus costs incurred (GST inc on admin only) |
