Western Power's response

Western Power is working hard to save energy and cut down on its greenhouse gas emissions.

Our actions include:

Smart Grid – Western Power is helping to create a sustainable network by developing a smart grid. A smart grid is a network that allows energy to flow in two directions. The system we have at the moment was designed for electricity to flow one way – from the power station to your home. A smart grid will enable homes and businesses to supply energy back into the network!

New technologies – Smart metres will allow homes and businesses to actively monitor and manage their energy use in the future.

Renewable resources – At the moment, about 5% of the energy from WA’s main electricity grid comes from renewable resources.

Green Town Project - The Green Town Project being implemented in Denmark and Walpole is a series of environmentally friendly energy efficiency initiatives originally developed by Western Power and the communities of Denmark and Walpole, via the South Coast Power Working Group, to promote energy efficiency, reduce peak power consumption and assist in the improvement of power reliability. Find out more about the Green Town Project.

Tree Planting - Since 2006, Western Power has planted over 500,000 native trees and shrubs to offset a proportion of its carbon emissions, improve diversity of plant and animal life and repair degraded, salt-affected landscapes, particularly in our wheat belt.

  • Using recycling bins in our Head Office
  • Keeping our air conditioning to 24 degrees at home and in the office
  • Participating in Earth Hour
  • Monitoring and reporting our greenhouse gas emissions
