Power Down Ranger training course

Power Down RangerBefore you can become a Power Down Ranger you will need to complete s short trainging course. We wouldn't want you to go out into the world without any training.

It is a perfectly normal day. School has just finished and people everywhere are doing what they normally do – driving home, thinking about all the chores they have to do and wondering what snack to have when they get in. Without realising it, these people are “Power Raiders”. Now, the Power Raiders are really just like normal people, but they have one problem: they gobble up energy and cause the planet to get sick!

So, let’s follow the story of 'Peter the Power Raider' and see if we can help him to “Power Down”.

Peter comes home from a long day at school. He chucks his bag by the door and kicks off his shoes.

First mission: get a snack. He opens up the fridge freezer and peers in. He sees a microwave pizza – great! Pete puts that pizza in the microwave. He hears the ping of the microwave, grabs his snack and flops down in the lounge. Just in time for Neighbours! He switches on the TV using the remote and puts his feet up. 5 minutes into the TV show, Pete starts to get hot, but he’s too tired to take any clothes off and too busy munching on his pizza to think of anything else. He sees the remote for the air conditioning and cranks it to 19 degrees. That’s better. But is it?

Now Peter knows he’s got 30 minutes to relax before Mum comes in and nags him about washing his school uniform and getting showered and ready for dinner. While he’s watching TV, he might as well log on to his computer and see what’s happening out there. 20 minutes of relaxation later and, as predicted, Mum turns up and starts going on about washing his clothes and getting ready for dinner. He gets up and stumbles exhausted to the shower (if only parents knew how tiring life is!). He stands under the shower for 10 minutes.

Well Peter gets out of the shower eventually, grabs his clothes and throws them into the laundry. He sees mum put his school clothes in the washer and his footy kit in the dryer. By the time he’s changed into clean clothes and got downstairs, he smells something delicious cooking for dinner…he’s starving again! Poor Old Peter!

Peter the Power Raider used a lot of electricity.

What should Peter have done to Power Down! Peter should have:

  1. Taken some of his clothing off to cool down before he put on the air conditioner
  2. Set the air conditioning to 24 degrees
  3. Turned the TV off at the wall before he started using his computer
  4. Turned the air conditioner and computer off before he went to the shower
  5. Had a four minute shower
  6. Told his mother that she should put a full load in both the clothes washer and dryer and to run them before 4pm or after 9pm
