Peak loads

A peak is when demand for electricity is at its highest. In Perth, it is usually between 4pm and 9pm in summer.

Power Down

You can replace your electric hot water system with a gas boosted solar system that gets free energy from the sun! This could save up to 3,500kg ($630) of greenhouse gases every year!Air conditioner use stacks up to a third of power consumed in WA on hot days during February and March. So, changing the setting on your air conditioners to 24 degrees or using alternatives like fans are great ways to beat the peak.

Here are some more ideas to reduce electricity use during the peak:

  • Don’t use appliances between 4pm and 9pm - Avoid using washing machines, dryers or any other major appliance during peak times between 4pm and 9pm.
  • Only use the pool pump if needed - if you are not swimming, try not to run the pool pump between 4pm and 9pm. Use a timer on pool pumps and put it on for shorter times in winter.
  • Winter Peaks - There are peaks in winter too! Instead of coming home and putting the air conditioner on, we put the heater on instead. If you do need some heating, set the heat to 20 degrees and seal windows and doors to stop drafts. Don’t forget to put on a jumper!
  • And if you’re not in charge of setting some of these appliances, it could be your chance to get even - nag the parents for a change!

Can you think of any other ways to beat the peak?
