We all use energy every day. In the morning energy is used for heating water for your shower, cooking your toast and driving to school. During the school day, energy powers the computers in the library, the bell at recess and the lights in your classroom. Think about all of the rooms in your school - that's a lot of lights!
In our homes we use energy for most things that we do! Do you know what uses the most energy in your home?
Water Heating: this adds up to nearly one third or household energy consumption, creating 2 tonnes of greenhouse gases and costing up to $625 per year!
Heating and Cooling: this adds up to 26% of energy used in WA homes and generates over 1 tonne of greenhouse gas emissions and costs $100’s per year!
Refrigeration: this adds up to 16% of the electricity used in WA homes and can generate up to 1.5 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year!
Lighting: keeping lights on when they are not needed and using non-energy efficient bulbs can really add to the energy bill!
Stand-by Power: this is the energy used by an appliance when it is plugged in but not in use. Leaving your appliances on Standby can cost around $100 per year! In Australia, that adds up to $950million per year!
In Western Australia, energy consumption has gone up by over 15% in the last 15 years! That’s a lot – and that’s why we need to become more energy wise!
There are many things we can do to become energy wise. Discuss these ideas with your friends, parents and teachers. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to save energy!
