Medical Centre 66/11 kv zone substation

Zone substation expansion and distribution network upgrade

Medical Centre 66/11 kV zone substation expansion and distribution network upgrade

The QEII Medical Centre (Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital), presently connected to Medical Centre Zone Substation, is in the process of a major upgrade. This upgrade will increase the load from 12.5 MVA to 23 MVA in 2015 then 27.5 MVA by 2020. This load increase is driving a customer-driven project to upgrade the Medical Centre substation to 11 kV by June 2014.

A new 66/11 kV substation will be constructed on land adjacent to the existing 66/6.6 kV substation. The substation will be constructed to an N-1 standard due to the essential services that the medical centre provides. This element of the project has an estimated cost of $30 million.

The current options for the new 66/11 kV substation are outline below.

  1. Replacing the existing zone substation with 3 x 33 MVA zone substation.
  2. Replacing the existing zone substation with a 2 x 66 MVA zone substation.

Either option that is selected will be operated at 66 kV and then operated at 132 kV in the future.

The target completion date for the Medical Centre Zone substation expansion is June 2014 to meet the QEII requirement and to integrate with Western Power’s wider network investment strategy in the area.
