Mundaring Weir substation
Announcement June 2011: No new substation for Mundaring Weir
Western Power has been undertaking feasibility studies and community consultation to identify the best option to provide power for the Water Corporations new treatment plant and pumping station. Initially it was expected that Western Power would need to replace the existing 66/6.6kV Mundaring Weir substation in order to meet the Water Corporation’s power requirements.
However the final power requirements ended up being lower than initially estimated. This led Western Power to review its plans in light of the new supply target, and the option to supply power via underground cables from the Sawyers Valley substation became feasible.
The underground cable route options and associated technical studies are still to be completed but based on the investigations undertaken so far, we are pleased to now be able to confirm with you that the Mundaring Weir replacement substation is no longer planned to go ahead. Efforts will now focus on progressing the Sawyers Valley solution and we still expect to meet the Water Corporations requested completion date of November 2012.
Community Design Workshops
We would like to thank those who took part in the community design workshops, despite the knowledge that there was the possibility that the project would not go ahead. Their input will be valuable to Western Power for future projects. You can read a report of proceedings from the design workshops here (PDF 300kb).
