Background
Between 2010 and 2014, the Water Corporation plan to build a number of new assets at or near the Mundaring Weir, including a water treatment plant, a pump station, pipelines, as well as upgrading the Weir itself. Included with these assets is the replacement of the existing substation. These assets form the Water Corporation's Mundaring Weir Water Supply Improvement Project (WSIP).
The proposed water treatment plant (WTP) requires the replacement and upgrade of the existing substation, located below the Mundaring Weir. The replacement of the substation, together with the installation of the WTP and Mundaring C Pump Station, will lead to essential improvements in the water quality and reliability of water supplies to the Perth Hills, Goldfields and Agricultural regions.
It is anticipated that the operation of these new assets will require 12 megawatts of power by 2011 and a long term power requirement by 2029 of 15 megawatts. The electrical load of the proposed infrastructure is to be significantly greater than the capacity of the existing substation hence it is proposed to replace and upgrade the substation. The substation is required to be in service by the end of December 2012, and will have a distribution voltage of 22 kV.
360 Environmental Pty Ltd (360 Environmental) was commissioned by the Water Corporation, on behalf of Western Power and the Water Corporation, to investigate location options for a new substation to replace the existing substation.
