Mid West Energy Project - Stage 2 (Northern Section)

In December 2009, Western Power applied for Infrastructure Australia funding from the Australian Government to build Stage 2. The project was noted as being of key national significance, and we expect the proposal to progress to the next phase soon.

The key drivers for Mid West Energy Project Northern Section (Stage 2) relate to the need to meet the electricity demands of existing and prospective customers, particularly:

  • Load growth in the Geraldton region from existing customers
  • Load growth from major new customers including the proposed new port at Oakajee, expansion of the Geraldton Port and possible new iron ore mines north east of Geraldton seeking connection
  • Potential new generators seeking connection to the grid

Whilst acknowledging the work undertaken and excellent local input provided on this project in previous years (which was previously known as Eneabba – Moonyoonooka), a number of new opportunities have opened up in the region, and Western Power has started a fresh investigation of options and opportunities for the ultimate connection through to the Geraldton area, and is seeking input into this process.

Ultimately, Stage 2 will involve a connection/solution through to Geraldton. There are various ways this could be achieved, including via our proposed substitution at Moonyoonooka. As part of this process, we are keen for the public to contribute ideas, concerns and opportunities in the region. This will be kicked off via a number of community sessions in September – with more to follow as the investigations progress.
