The West End Option: Line route and substation site selection

Western Power is currently investigating the options for reinforcing the power supply to the Geraldton Port and CBD area. An option under consideration involves connecting a proposed new substation in the port area to the existing Rangeway substation. At this stage of the project we are working to determine the substation site, the transmission line route to connect the new substation to the network, and whether the transmission line will be overhead, underground, or a combination of both for this particular option.

As the project progresses, new options may be identified and others discounted. This is normal practice in the evolution of an options selection process. Western Power endeavours to keep all options on the table as we continue to investigate in more detail. Western Power is encouraging alternative suggestions regarding these options and other options that you think could be suitable. The feedback you provide will form part of a more detailed analysis of each option, as well as suggested alternatives and key considerations. Please see the engagement page for details on how to have your voice heard.

Substation site

Western Power initially considered three substation site options, as discussed at the April community session. Further investigations have discovered other possibilities and work is underway to determine if these are feasible options. We have identified four sites which may now be possibilities, subject to negotiations with the current owners of those sites.

Transmission line

As Western Power is regulated by the Economic Regulation Authority, we need to ensure that the most prudent and efficient decision is made, in the interests of the broader WA community. There are many pros and cons to overhead versus underground lines, including significant cost differences between them. Therefore, we are working to ensure that the most appropriate solution is implemented considering cost, technical, social and environmental considerations of different route options.
