Project history

Project history October 2010

The staged conversion of the Cottesloe substation is well underway with the substation currently operating at both 66 kV and 132 kV. The conversion of the distribution cable network exiting the substation from 6.6 kV to 11 kV is scheduled for completion in October 2010.

The second stage of civil works within the substation is scheduled to commence in November 2010 and will be completed by April 2011. These civil works will allow Western Power to progress with the final transmission line configuration.

The teeing together of two 66 kV transmission lines north of Cottesloe substation is scheduled to take place this November. The work will involve the connection of the existing Western Terminal to Cottesloe and Nedlands to North Fremantle transmission lines. These works will involve the installation of two new wood poles, the replacing of one wood pole and the removal of 7 existing wooden poles. Please see diagram below. Two trees located within the rail reserve to the East of Curtin Avenue will be removed in order for these works to progress.

The removal of these trees has been a contentious issue and the matter was referred to the Heritage Council. The Heritage Council had the area under assessment due the presence of Norfolk Island Pines. On the 29th of November Western Power received approval from the Heritage Council to proceed with the removal of the trees. Western Power acknowledges the value large trees bring to an area however the new line configuration involving removal of a section of line down Curtin Avenue would not have been possible if these trees remained. The two trees in question were not endemic to the area and in a state of decline. As part of the landscaping works around the substation Western Power will be planting native species.

Landscaping

Western Power will commence landscaping works at the substation in October / November 2010, following the completion of the distribution cable works. The landscaping works, which will consist of the planting of water-wise native species, will provide visual screening of the substation once established. The landscaping works are to be undertaken in two stages due to ongoing works at the substation, with the second stage to be completed in July 2011.

Proposed project timeline

Since the last project update, Western Power has revised the timelines for this project.
Key future works for this project include:

  • October 2010 – completion of underground distribution cable works
  • October 2010 – July 2011 - Landscaping works (see plan)
  • October 2010 Energising of second 132 kV transformer
  • November 2010 - Decommissioning and removal of 66 kV transformer
  • November 2010 – Teeing together of two 66 kV transmission lines to the North of the substation
  • November 2010 – April 2011 – Civil works within the substation to accommodate the final transmission line configuration
  • June 2011 – Completion of final stage of transmission works
  • June 2011 – Removal of redundant section of 132 kV line on Curtin Avenue
  • July 2011- Project practical completion

Distribution works

When distribution line works are carried out, power disruptions are sometimes necessary, to protect the safety of our work crews. Distribution lines are the smaller lines and underground cables which transport power from substations to local homes and businesses.

We understand that this can be inconvenient for the local residential and business community and we strive to minimise the disruptions.

You will be advised via letter drop (as has occurred for previous power interruptions) when any planned outages will need to occur.
