Maddington substation

Project update October 2011

Western Power is pleased to announce that the Maddington Substation was commissioned in June, and that landscaping was completed in August.

We are currently planning to install three safety barriers adjacent to steel poles in Austin Avenue, Maddington. This work is anticipated to occur between December 2011 and February 2012, depending on when the designs can be finalised.

Project timeline

  • The substation is now in operation having been commissioned on 21 June 2011.
  • Reinstatement following optic fibre installation continues and will be completed by the end of July 2011.
  • Landscaping within the verge in front of the substation was completed in August 2011.
  • Installation of safety barriers, to be completed by February 2012.

In detail

The new Maddington Substation allows us to meet increasing power demand and maintain the reliability of power within Maddington and its surrounding suburbs.

Zone substations such as this one convert high voltage power to lower voltage electricity (in this case 132,000 Volts to 22,000 Volts) for transportation by distribution lines to homes and businesses.

The substation site is located at 29 Austin Avenue, Maddington, within Davison Industrial Area. The substation is connected to the existing Cannington Terminal and Gosnells Substation by 132,000 volt (132 kV) transmission lines.

Optic fibre installation

Optic fibre cables have been installed between Maddington substation and Gosnells substation and between Maddington substation and Kenwick Link Terminal. Reinstatements of verges disturbed during trenching for the cables are continuing.

The purpose of the optic fibre is to provide a communications link, allowing information about faults and other network activity, to be relayed immediately and automatically to the Control Centre in East Perth. It also allows remote switching (remotely operating some control functions) to be carried out which significantly improves reliability, and reduces restoration times if there is a fault.

Substation perimeter wall art piece

Western Power collaborated with the City of Gosnells and Artrage to develop the design to be applied to the perimeter wall of the substation. An eye-catching community urban art piece was applied to the wall by a local artist with support from local youths. Drive by and take a look!
