Baldivis substation

We are proposing to build a new zone substation in Baldivis to provide additional electricity to the area following the rapid growth in Perth's southern suburbs.

December 2010 – Required In-Service Date Deferred

The original required in-service date for the Baldivis substation was set for November of 2013, however recent reviews of demand in the Baldivis area and the potential to increase capacity of existing substations now means it is unlikely to be needed until 2015. Uncertainty is inherent in the nature of our business. As part of our regular review of development throughout the State and the associated demand for power supply, we review all projects and prioritise projects to ensure the reliability and security of the network. Our plans always need to be flexible as changes to usage patterns, connection needs and forecasts mean that we often need to delay, advance or alter projects to meet the identified needs at any given time.

Western Power will be continuing with the land exchange between 780 Eighty Road and Lot 3 Pike Road as well as screening for adjoining landholders, however the fencing and landscaping design works are being placed on hold until Western Power can confirm the required in-service date of the substation. The fencing and landscaping design works are on hold due to the possibility that there will be amendments to substation design and layout in the future which may render these works obsolete.

Western Power greatly appreciates the time and effort put into the design process by the community members participating in the design group and is disappointed to have to put that process on hold for the time-being. That input has been recorded and will certainly be taken into account when the process recommences and community members will again be invited to participate. We do believe that it is the best choice for Western Australia to avoid investing in any new infrastructure until it is absolutely necessary.

Western Power will continue to provide the community and landowners with updates on the project as they occur through mailings and via the website. We will engage with the community once the time comes to recommence.

The project

We are proposing to construct a 132 000 volt (132kV) zone substation on a site located on Pike Road, Baldivis. Zone substations transform high voltage electricity (transmission) to lower voltage (distribution) which is then sent out to homes and businesses.

The substation is required to provide reliable and secure power supplies to the area for the future, as Perth’s southern suburbs continue to grow and the demand for power increases.

Zone substations need to be located central to the ‘load area’ i.e. the area that required the electricity.

The new substation will ensure ongoing power reliability and security for current and future residents, providing an important part of the electricity network.

What is a zone substation?

A zone substation is used to transform high voltage electricity (transmission) to lower voltage electricity (distribution).

In order to meet the technical requirement for a substation, the substation must be located near the area of electricity demand.
