Working near powerlines or cables

If you are planning work near an overhead powerline, you must lodge a request to work near underground and overhead powerlines (PDF 188kb).

When we have received your request, we will give you the voltages of power lines at your site.  It is then the responsibility of the owner, company or contractor to assess whether the work can be performed safely.

If it cannot be performed safely, we will provide a quote for the work necessary to make the situation safe.

This applies to any type of work including:

  • building construction
  • renovating buildings, particularly second storeys
  • erecting signs
  • building shopfronts
  • using cranes
  • farming

Please refer to our information pack (PDF 1.2Mb) for detailed information on work procedures near overhead powerlines. This pack sets out the requirements for erecting scaffolding and operating mobile plant in specified danger zones.
