Oversized vehicles

Transporting oversized loads can be dangerous if safety measures are not taken to ensure the load remains a safe distance from powerlines.

Applying for a High Load Authorisation

Operators of loads higher than 4.3 metres (4.6 metres for livestock vehicles travelling on nominated routes) or wider than 5.5 meters need to:

  1. read Transporting high loads - Western Power’s online authorisation system (PDF 149kb)
  2. complete a Western Power High load movement authorisation form
  3. once this has been approved, make an application to Main Roads Western Australia for an Indivisible Load Permit
  4. recent changes to the MRD Class 2 & 3 Restricted Access Vehicle permits means operators with this class of permit now must also obtain authorisation from Western Power.  Currently Western Power is unable to issue blanket authorisations on the RAV 2 & 3 network. For further information on changes to the class 2 & 3 Restricted Access Vehicles please see the Main Roads Department website.

Assessment

When we receive your application will survey the proposed route and assess the potential impact on electrical infrastructure. Where necessary, we will move or raise powerlines, shield them with insulated covers, or provide an escort to ensure the load is transported safely.

If the load does not require an escort, we will issue a High Load Movement Authorisation, within five working days of your application.

If it does require an escort, we will issue a High Load Movement Certificate. Where an escort only is required, this will be issued within five working days of your application.  If a more detailed evaluation of potential impacts is necessary, we will discuss this with the customer and prepare a quote.

We issue quotes where:

  • logistical planning and/or construction work is needed, such as moving or raising powerlines; or
  • A survey of powerline heights is required.

Please note, for safety reasons, we are unable to conduct oversize load escorts at night.
