Trees or branches that come into contact with powerlines are a major cause of power failure and can also result in bushfires and serious accidents. It is important to grow the right tree in the right place so they don't come into contact with powerlines. If trees have not been planted in the right place, or have grown too big, they need to be trimmed to keep them clear of powerlines.
The diagram below shows how to check if your trees need cutting. A PDF of the diagram is downloadable from the 'Download' section of this page.

It is very dangerous to attempt to trim trees anywhere near powerlines. If you touch any part of a tree or branch that comes into contact with a line, you risk serious injury or death from electric shock. By law, no person or equipment is permitted within three metres of a powerline without proper certifi cation or training.
Professional tree pruning companies are listed in the Yellow Pages and should have:
Even the slightest contact between trees and powerlines can cause sparks and start a fire. Bushfires pose serious dangers to people and property and also cause widespread power disruptions.
The risk is even greater in areas that are susceptible to bushfires. Residents in the Perth hills and semi-rural and rural areas need to be particularly vigilant.
In addition to the risk of fire, trees and branches can fall and break powerlines with devastating consequences including injury, death and damage to property.
