The safety switch is one of the most important defences against electric shock in the home. While safety switches can save lives and prevent injury, they are no substitute for being alert to potential electrical hazards.
It is wise to regularly check that appliances and household wiring are in good condition and working properly. Earth wires in appliance cords and in electrical installations provide a lifeline. If a fault occurs in an appliance such as a short circuit, the current flows through the earth wire to ground. This causes a fuse to blow, a circuit breaker to open or a safety switch to disconnect the electricity connected to the appliance.
