An upgrade of the existing 66,000 volt (66 kV) Sawyers Valley substation is proposed to convert it from a 66/22 kV substation to a 132/22 kV substation. This work is planned to be completed by the summer of 2011/12. The substation is to be cut-into the existing Darlington – Northam 132 kV transmission line located 1 km south of the substation via a new section of double circuit line. This project will assist Western Power to maintain safe reliable power supply to the residents of Sawyers Valley, Mundaring and Childow, and the surrounding locale.
The project is required to prevent Sawyers Valley transformer capacity shortfalls, forecast to occur in summer 2011/12. Given that the existing substation has been in place for 30 years, new infrastructure is required to increase the substations reliability. The project will involve the installation of a new 132 kV switchyard alongside the existing 66 kV switchyard within land currently managed by Western Power. Clearing of vegetation located within the Mundaring National Park is necessary for the construction of the new double circuit 132 kV line, which will be located along the edge of the existing Water Corporation gravel access road.
Prior to commencing works, a development application will be lodged with the local council for referral to the West Australian Planning Commission. The project will also involve the installation of additional distribution feeders. As part of the Sawyers Valley Substation upgrade a 40 metre monopole will be installed within the site to improve Western Power’s communications network, allowing for remote monitoring and control of the new equipment.
