In detail

Power demand in the Osborne Park area continues to climb due to population growth and increased use of electrical appliances such as air conditioners.

By 2009, the demand on the Osborne Park and Yokine zone substations currently servicing the Osborne Park industrial area and its surrounds will have increased substantially. A new zone substation will be required to improve the capacity of the existing substations to transport sufficient electricity to the area.

Western Power has purchased land at 71-77 Albert Street, Osborne Park, to establish a new zone substation to service parts of Osborne Park, Tuart Hill, and Joondanna.

Zone substations convert high voltage power to lower voltage electricity for transportation by distribution lines to homes and businesses.

After extensive investigation, the Albert Street site was chosen for the new substation. Situated within an industrial/commercial area, the site will have minimal visual impact on residential areas.

Construction of the new Joondanna zone substation is expected to start during November 2008 and should be completed by November 2009. The timing may be brought forward should the continued growth exceed supply capacity earlier than anticipated.
