The Western Australian Planning Commission has identified Forrestdale as one of the state's fastest growing areas. As a result, it is anticipated that within the next 10 years capacity of the current zone substation will be insufficient to meet local power requirements. Power demand is expected to climb rapidly as developments are completed and as population density and use of electrical appliances increases.
Western Power has purchased land at 440 Nicholson Road in Forrestdale to establish a new zone substation to service Forrestdale and the surrounding area.
Zone substations convert high voltage power to lower voltage electricity for transportation by distribution lines to homes and businesses.
Our current planning projection suggests that the substation will need to be in service by the end of 2015 to meet the increasing power demand in the network. This increase is primarily due to ongoing commercial and residential development in the area. The new zone substation will also be required to improve the capacity of Southern River substation to meet local power needs. The timing may be brought forward should power consumption in the area increase beyond forecast levels.
The Nicholson Road site was chosen after extensive investigation. The site is well positioned to easily connect to the transmission network. The site was also chosen because it is located on semi-rural land where it is unlikely to impact established residential subdivisions and will allow developers the opportunity to plan around it in the future.
Construction of the new Forrestdale substation is expected to start during November 2014 and should be completed by November 2015.
Signs indicating Western Power's ownership of the land and intended future use of the site will be erected in the near future.
