Preferred site

Terminal substation siteThe Neerabup site has been chosen after thorough consideration of several other options. The current site was selected on a balance of social, environmental, technical and economic factors.

Through discussions with the local community, stakeholders and associated site investigations, Western Power moved the site 40 metres east of Ziatas Road. This moved the structure further away from homes and still ensured that the bulk oil containing equipment was located outside of the Gnangara Priority 1 Underground Water Pollution Control Area.

The benefits and reasons for the proposed site selection include:

  • current site avoids areas of high conservational value
  • location is central to the electricity load, optimising efficiency
  • minimal visual impact to the local community
  • ready access to line routes which meets construction and maintenance requirements
  • reduces demand on the Northern terminal substation in Malaga, which will reach its supply capacity by the summer of 2008/09
  • ensures efficient supply of electricity to Perth's northern suburbs into the future
  • assists with the expansion of Neerabup industrial park
  • feeds local zone substations in the region
  • minimal native vegetation clearing
