Project background

The Neerabup terminal substation is to be built on a site located on the eastern side of Ziatas Road, Neerabup within the State-owned Gnangara pine plantation land. After considering a number of potential sites, the current site was chosen for technical, economical, environmental and social reasons.

The location of the terminal substation is close to where demand for electricity is high, its impact on the local environment is low, it can be built on time and provides easy access for connection to existing nearby transmission lines.

When completed, the terminal substation will connect with Western Power’s electricity network by a new 330,000 volt (330 kV) transmission line passing through the pine plantation on the eastern side of the terminal substation site.

As part of the Neerabup terminal substation work, two 132,000 volt (132 kV) transmission lines will be installed, one on each side of Pederick and Old Yanchep Roads, Neerabup.

As the electricity demand in the Perth’s northern suburbs increases, more overhead 132 kV transmission lines will be built between this terminal substation and zone substations in the area on local roads.

Terminal substations are a major interconnection point in the electricity transmission system. They are generally larger and spread over a greater area than zone substations. A terminal substation 'steps down' extra high transmission voltages (eg. 330,000 Volt or 330 kV) to lower transmission voltages (e.g. 132,000 Volt or 132,000 kV). They also can be used as switching stations to control the flow of power in the network.

Terminal substations comprise powerlines and equipment such as transformers, control facilities and switchyards, some of which is housed in buildings. The equipment varies in appearance depending on the function of the terminal substation.

Western Power's terminal substations service large areas in the Perth metropolitan and country area and are capable of supplying many smaller zone substations.

Over the last six months, Western Power has been consulting with the local community and Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG). This process resulted in the footprint of the site being moved 40 metres to the east of Ziatas Road, further away from surrounding property. In addition, the route of the new 330 kV transmission line was relocated ton reduce its visual impact on surrounding property owners. More information.

The Neerabup terminal substation will be constructed on 17 hectares of land and will be a staged development. The project will also involve the installation of transmission lines. See the latest site location and 330 kV transmission line route.

In the initial development the project will include the following components.

  • one 490 MVA transformer
  • one 330 kV double circuit transmission line
  • two 132 kV transmission lines to be constructed along Pederick Road.

The future plans for the site over a period of 20 to 30 years.

  • three 490 MVA transformer
  • three 330 kV double circuit transmission line
  • up to 18 132 kV transmission lines. Line routes are yet to be identified. Western Power will utilise the local road networks, combining both overhead and underground options where possible
