A significant portion of Perth's load is supplied by base load power stations located in the south west region. The IMO (Independent Market Operator) forecast shows that from 2010, the transmission network will not have sufficient capacity to accommodate the forecasted increase in south west generation.
In order to solve capacity constraints to the Perth metropolitan area, Western Power is proposing to reconstruct the existing 132 kV transmission line between the Perth metropolitan area and Collie (via Boddington), to become a new 165 km, 330 kV transmission line from Collie to the Perth metro area. The southern section of this line between Collie and Boddington is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion late 2008.
The 330 kV transmission line will increase the power transfer capability between generation sources located in the south west of Western Australia and the major load centre in the metropolitan area. The increased power transfer capability will allow the connection of new generators, which will be required to meet forecast increases in demand.

Construction of the new 330 kV transmission line from the south-west will need to connect into the exisiting 330 kV network by 2011.
To enable this connection, in February 2008 Western Power announced a solution to 'tee' into the exisiting 330 kV network at a location in Hacketts Gully Kalamunda, through the use of a gantry. This solution delayed the need for the proposed Eastern terminal switchyard site, but met the need for an additional 1000MW of power to service the Perth metropolitain area.
In August 2008, Western Power committed to a fresh start on the Eastern terminal switchyard project.
This fresh start will include reviewing alternative supply options, nominating a new senior project team and working with the community to determine the preferred engagement model. This fresh start will also include a review of whether the 'tee' is required, and of what other technical options are available to connect the new 330 kV transmission line from the south-west.
Construction of the 330 kV transmission line from the south-west is still required by 2011 and Western Power will work with the community in an 'open-book' style to determine how this line will connect into the existing network.
