Western Power is currently working with landowners to determine the pole locations for a new 132,000 Volt (132 kV) transmission line.
Western Power is planning a major upgrade of the power line between Margaret River and Busselton to improve power reliability in the region. The existing 66 kV wood pole transmission line will be replaced by a new doublecircuit transmission line on steel poles. The new double-circuit line, which will be constructed in parallel to the existing one, will be operating as a 132 kV line on one side and a 66 kV line on the other. Once the new line is in-service, the old wood pole line will be dismantled and removed from site.
The proposed timescale for the project may also be affected by the need for approval from the Environmental Protection Authority at both State and Federal level. Western Power is currently in communication with the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts to minimise the impact of vegetation clearing on the habitat of known threatened species such as Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo and the Western Ringtail Possum.
To minimise disturbance to properties, particularly those in low-lying areas, it is expected that construction works will be restricted to dry weather conditions between December and May. To meet the scheduled completion date of November 2009, the construction is expected to commence in the summer of 2008/2009.
Western Power aims to complete this project with minimal disturbance to properties and affected residents. As some planned power outages will occur during the construction phase, extensive consultation with the Shires, public utilities such as hospitals and special interest groups in the region will be conducted. The Shire will also be consulted on any road closures that may be necessary. Western Power is committed to making provision for alternative routes over the period of works.
