Belmont Kewdale Welshpool transmission line

Western Power is proposing to construct a new 132 kV transmission line along Sheffield Road, Banksia Road, Dowd Street, Kewdale Road, Miles Road, Leach Highway and Jeffrey Street in the suburbs of Welshpool and Kewdale.

As part of this project, the transmission line network in the Cannington area will be reinforced, by rearranging the 132 kV transmission lines between our terminal substation at Cannington and zone substations at Welshpool, Belmont and Rivervale.

In order to maintain a reliable supply of power to the region, the new transmission line must be completed by the middle of 2009.

Reason for the project

Over the past five years, the demand for electricity has increased at more than 10% per annum. This increase is expected to continue.

The proposed new transmission line is required to meet the increasing power demand as well as improve the reliability of the electricity supply to residents and businesses in the Welshpool, Kewdale, Belmont and Rivervale area as well as Perth's central business district.

Without the project, electricity supply in these areas will not be able to meet the peak demand expected to be experienced during the 2008-2009 summer and beyond.

Key project elements

Section 1

  • Construct 700 metres of the 132 kV transmission line along Sheffield Road.
  • Direct connection between the Forrestfield and the Kalamunda zone substations.
  • Re-configured redundant section of transmission line to form part of the new Cannington to Belmont 132 kV transmission line.

Section 2

  • Construct 4.5 kilometres of the 132 kV transmission line along Banksia Road, Dowd Street, Kewdale Road, Miles Road, Leach Highway and Jeffrey Street.
  • Connect the existing Welshpool to Belmont 132 kV transmission line to the Rivervale to Belmont 132 kV transmission line, reinforcing the Cannington load area network.
  • Underground some of the existing overhead distribution powerlines (e.g. on sections of Banksia, Miles and Kewdale Roads and Jeffrey Street).

Working with the community

Western Power will ensure that occupants affected by the transmission line works are kept well informed about the project leading up to and during the construction phase.

Environmental considerations

To allow for the construction of the line along Dowd Street, a number of trees will need to be removed or selectively pruned. Western Power received approval and support for these works from the City of Canning at its recent council meeting. As an offset, Western Power will be contributing approximately $250,000 to cover the cost of re-landscaping Dowd Street following the construction of the line.

Western Power’s commitment to protecting the environment ensures that the planning, design and construction of all of its assets is in strict accordance with Commonwealth and State environmental legislation.
