Belmont Kewdale Welshpool transmission line

Over the past five years, the demand for electricity has increased at more than 10% per annum - an increase which expected to continue.

To help keep up with growth in the areas of Belmont, Kewdale, Welshpool, Riverdale and the Perth CBD, Western Power has built a new 132 kV transmission line along Sheffield Road, Banksia Road, Dowd Street, Kewdale Road, Miles Road, Leach Highway and Jeffrey Street in the suburbs of Welshpool and Kewdale.

Additionally, Cannington's transmission line network was reinforced by adjusting the routes of the 132 kV transmission lines between the Cannington terminal substation and other zone substations at Welshpool, Belmont and Rivervale.

Environmental considerations

To allow for the construction of the line along Dowd Street, a number of trees were removed or selectively pruned.  After receiving approval and support from the City of Canning for these works, Western Power then contributed over $250,000 to cover the cost of re-landscaping Dowd Street.

Western Power's strong commitment to protecting the environment ensures that the planning, design and construction of all of its assets is in strict accordance with Commonwealth and State environmental legislation.

Key project elements

Stage 1 - Completed 2008

  • Construct 700 metres of the 132 kV transmission line along Sheffield Road.
  • Direct connection between the Forrestfield and the Kalamunda zone substations.
  • Re-configured redundant section of transmission line to form part of the new Cannington to Belmont 132 kV transmission line.

Stage 2 - Completed 2008

  • Construct 4.5 kilometres of the 132 kV transmission line along Banksia Road, Dowd Street, Kewdale Road, Miles Road, Leach Highway and Jeffrey Street.
  • Connect the existing Welshpool to Belmont 132 kV transmission line to the Rivervale to Belmont 132 kV transmission line, reinforcing the Cannington load area network.
  • Underground some of the existing overhead distribution powerlines (e.g. on sections of Banksia, Miles and Kewdale Roads and Jeffrey Street).

Stage 3 - Last 2009

  • Reinstatement of roads, curbs, flora and landscaping that were affected during Stage 1 and Stage 2 works.
  • Finalisation of planned mitigation works with route aligned utilities, eg Alinta, Telstra.

Stage 4 - End 2009

  • New 132 kV transmission lines to be switched on.

Working with the community

Western Power will ensure that occupants affected by the transmission line works are kept well informed about expected in service dates for the newly built lines.
