EMF guidelines

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia guidelines for human exposure to EMF are:.

  • 1,000 milliGausse (mG) for continuous 24 hour per day exposure
  • 10,000 milliGausse (mG) for a few hours per day (for occupational purposes)

Different limits have been set for people exposed because of their occupation and for the general public. People exposed through their occupation receive training and are exposed under controlled conditions. Occupational exposures are also limited to the duration of the working day and over their working lifetime.

Powerlines are only one source of exposure to EMF. Even people living quite close to powerlines may be exposed to higher (but intermittent) levels of EMF inside their own home because the wiring and appliances can emit quite high levels of EMF.
