Residential

To apply for a new residential connection, you must be planning to install a standard supply to a domestic dwelling on vacant land.

If you are planning any kind of subdivision, you should also read the information on subdivisions.

There are three steps to establishing a new connection.

Step one

You will need to set up an account with an electricity retailer and provide the account number to your builder or electrical contractor so that they may arrange your connection.

Step two

Western Power installs a 'point of supply'. In most cases this will consist of an underground cable from the nearest powerline to a pillar, just inside your property boundary.

Mini Pillar Installation

Step three

A licensed electrical contractor installs a cable between the pillar and the meter box/premises. This part of the connection is the property owner's responsibility and you or your builder will need to arrange it.

  • Contact your builder or electrical contractor

Western Power standard supply

Western Power defines standard supply at 240 V single-phase or 440 V three-phase as:

  • 63 Amps single-phase (urban areas)
  • 32 Amps single-phase (rural areas and towns)
  • 32 Amps multi-phase
  • a maximum consumer mains size of 35mm²

If you require more than a standard supply you will need to fill in the Design and Quotation Application form.

Please note: If there is no overhead powerline or underground cable within 60 metres of your boundary, we may need to extend the network.

If you need help determining whether your supply is standard or require more information please call 13 10 87

How much will it cost?

A fixed charge 'pole to pillar' rate of $681 may apply if there is a suitable power supply available, and certain other conditions are met.  You may be required to contribute towards the cost if:

  • your lot is larger than 2500 square meters
  • you are building more than three dwellings
  • we need to extend the network to reach your property
  • we need to upgrade the network to meet your capacity requirements
  • you want the pillar placed in a non-standard position
  • you require more than a standard supply
  • your lot is further than 25km from a substation

To find out if any of these factors will affect the cost, call 13 10 87.

How do I apply?

For a straightforward underground connection to one, two or three dwellings, please complete an online Domestic Underground Supply Application form.  For three (3) dwellings on a single lot, (ie. Strata development), the installation of a sub-mains switchboard by your electrical contractor is required and then the completion of the online Domestic Underground Supply Application form.

Note: An electrical contractor/consultant will need to be engaged to complete a 'Design and Quotation' and/or 'Domesitc Undergound Supply' Application form.

If you are building an unusually large home, or will run heavy-duty or three-phase equipment, you will need to use an electrical contractor to determine your power needs and to complete the applicable forms - usually a Design and Quotation Application form.
