Climate change

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. The Australian Government is leading our national response through expansion of the Renewable Energy Target (RET) and introduction of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

Western Power provided input to the Australian Energy Market Commission’s 2nd Interim Report into the Review of Energy Market Frameworks in the Light of Climate Change Polices. There are challenges in the incorporation of large volumes of intermittent sources of generation into our comparatively small network. Baseload renewable power stations are not anticipated in the short-term. As the principal network operator in Western Australia we have an important role in the transformation of the sector to a low carbon future and will be working with our stakeholders to respond to these challenges.

Power consumption in Western Australia has risen by approximately 5% per year for the past ten years and forecasts suggest this level of growth will continue. Not only has there been an increasing number of new business and homes connecting to the network but the average amount of power used per home has increased. Western Power supports the installation of small scale renewable energy systems and energy efficiency measures to offset and slow this growth as we strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
