Energy saving to Power Down

Reducing overall energy use is great for saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but we also need to "Power Down". A peak is the point where demand for electricity reaches it's highest level. In Perth, during summer, it is usually between 4:00pm and 9:00pm.

Air conditioner use in Perth amounts to nearly a third of power consumed on the hottest days in February and March so changing settings on airconditioners to 24 degress or using alternatives like fans are great ways to "Power Down".

Here are some more ideas to reduce electricity consumption at peak periods:

  • Reduce appliance use: avoid using washing machines, dryers or any other major appliance during peak times between 4.00pm and 9.00pm. Ensure new appliances have a 4 star rating or higher.
  • Reduce pool pump use: Unless you are swimming, avoid running your pool pump between 4.00pm and 9.00pm. Use a timer on pool pumps and reduce operating times during winter.
  • Winter peaks: There are peaks in winter too, so you can help by not overheating your house. Set the thermostat to 20 degrees and seal windows and doors to prevent drafts. Put on a jumper before turning on the heater.

Managing peak demands

WA's electricity consumption continues to rise as homes and businesses continue to use more electricity powered technology. By finding ways for our community to use the electricity network more efficiently, we can reduce spending on new infrastructure to meet increasing peaks.
