Power for Sensitive Purposes
Western Power recognises that there are customers who depend more on their power supply for particular purposes because of the impact on their personal well being or the community as a whole. Both residential and commercial customers may have special needs.
Residential customers may be using medical technology classified as Life Support Equipment.
Commercial and industrial businesses such as hospitals, utilities, public venues with large gatherings of people and heavy industry with environmental concerns are examples of such commercially sensitive loads.
Applying for registration as a 'sensitive customer' helps us stay informed about your situation so we can take into account your particular needs in the event of a power interruption.
Residential customers with Life Support Equipment
It is important that you register directly with your electricity retailer. Your retailer will give you details of their requirements for registration. Your electricity retailer will then pass this information to us.
Once your electricity retailer advises us that you have been registered as a Life Support Equipment customer, we will:
- Do our best to provide you with an uninterrupted supply of electricity.
- Notify you in writing, at least three business days in advance, when we plan to do work in your area that will require an interruption to your power supply.
It is important to note that, in an emergency situation, such as a major disaster or even a local incident in your area, such as a vehicle hitting a power pole, we cannot guarantee that you won't experience long interruptions. We recommend that you discuss an action plan with your doctor or medical service provider to help you deal with a long power interruption.
Options you should consider in advance of an extended power interruption include:
- Identify a location with emergency power capabilities and make plans to go there.
- Identify relatives or friends with whom you could stay.
- Consider purchasing a portable generator to provide back-up power. It is important to consult a licensed electrician to determine if a portable generator is the best option for you and if so, that it is installed and operated correctly.
It is important that you keep your retailer informed of your current contact details, or if circumstances change regarding life support equipment at your home.
Commercial or industrial customers can apply to become a "sensitive customer" where there is a high risk that an extended power interruption will result in adverse economic, health, environmental or public safety consequences.
It is important to note that, in an emergency situation, such as a major disaster or even a local incident in your area, such as a vehicle hitting a power pole, we cannot guarantee that you won't experience long interruptions.
We evaluate sensitive customers using a fair and equitable approach, based on the Risk Management Standard AS/ISO 31000. Where power is critical to your business, we encourage you to perform your own risk assessment on your business and implement controls for the management of the risk of power interruption.
Being registered can provide better visibility on our systems when it comes to work in your area. If you are notified of a planned outage for your area and have any concerns, please contact the project manager on the notice and further discuss your needs with them.
