Western Power bushfire grants now open
Release Date: 03 August 2009
Western Power’s sponsorship of volunteer bushfire brigades begins again in August with $80,000 in grants up for grabs.
Brigades operating within the SWIS network are invited to apply for up to $5,000 in funding to help purchase equipment or update facilities.
Over the last two years, more than 60 brigades across the SWIS network have received funding to purchase much needed equipment to service their community.
Western Power’s Managing Director, Mr Doug Aberle said he recognised that these brigades were staffed by volunteers and that funds can often be hard to come by.
"With the help of these grants, volunteer brigades from all across the south west have been able to purchase equipment like handheld radios, GPS units, water pumps, satellite phones, water tanks, retractable hose reels and upgrades to facilities and office equipment."
"We often work closely with theses brigades during fires and extreme weather events and so we recognise the vital service they provide the Western Australian community. This sponsorship serves as a small token of Western Power’s appreciation for the hard work these volunteers do, week in and week out," Mr Aberle said.
This is the third year of Western Power’s three year $300,000 sponsorship which provides grants to bushfire brigades, support for the association website and assistance with the FESA Bush Fire Forums.
Application forms for grants can be obtained from Western Power's website www.westernpower.com.au/bushfiregrants. Successful applicants will be notified after applications close on 28 August 2009.
