Western Power awards volunteer bush fire brigade grants

Release Date: 14 October 2009

Western Power’s 2009 sponsorship of the Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades has been a huge success. More than 80 applications were received and 21 approvals for funding have already been made, with an additional six brigades receiving partial funding.

Western Power has donated $300,000 over the last three years to bush fire brigades within the SWIS, providing more than 90 grants for the purchase of much needed equipment, support for the association website and assistance with the FESA Bush Fire Forums.

Western Power’s Managing Director, Mr Doug Aberle said he recognised that these brigades were staffed by volunteers and that funds can often be hard to come by.

“With the help of these grants, volunteer brigades in towns from Albany to Toodyay and many other high fire risk areas have been able to purchase equipment like heavy duty trailers, water tanks, electrical hose reels and upgrades to facilities and office equipment.

“Western Power is very proud to assist the selfless men and women of volunteer bush fire fighting brigades, who protect both their communities and Western Power’s electricity infrastructure,” Mr Aberle.

“We often work closely with these brigades during fires and extreme weather events and so we recognise the vital service they provide to the Western Australian community. This sponsorship serves as Western Power’s appreciation for the hard work these volunteers do, week in and week out,” Mr Aberle said.
