Toodyay Fire Update

Release Date: 30 December 2009

Western Power is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire at Toodyay which led to extensive damage to homes and other buildings.  Initial investigations indicate that the fire originated in the vicinity of powerlines.

Western Power Managing Director, Doug Aberle, said Western Power is preparing to commence work as soon as it has been granted access to the fire area.

“Obviously we are dealing with a devastating incident here and I would like to extend my sympathy to the people who have suffered injury and lost homes and property.

“Western Power is focusing on two main areas at the moment – one is preparing to restore power to the area, the other is understanding the cause of the fire.

120 poles and 55 transformers have been destroyed in the fire.  It may be many days before the last of the customers are reconnected.

“Western Power has organised for an independent fire expert to assist in the fire investigation with Energy Safety and FESA.

“All power poles in the area were thoroughly inspected in 2007 and the poles in the immediate vicinity of the fire did not require maintenance.

“Western Power requires all its poles to be inspected every four years in line with Australian industry practice,” he said.

As part of mobilising resources Western Power will have its communications caravan available in the Visitors Centre in Toodyay from tomorrow to assist people with inquiries about power restoration times.
