Storm damages power infrastructure
Release Date: 21 May 2009
12.15pm update
The cold front which crossed the coast at around lunch time today has caused power interruptions on the network affecting a large number of customers in the metropolitan area.
Approximately 11,000 properties have had power interrupted due to the storm. The main cause of faults today has been debris blowing into powerlines.
The major power interruptions currently affecting the metro area includes:
- Meadow Springs 3700 properties
- Henley Brook 1600 properties
- Mullaloo 2600 properties
- Medina 1000 properties
- Coolup 700 properties
Crews have been dispatched to these jobs and will restore power as quickly as possible.
Western Power has also received reports of over 60 hazards, including powerlines down. To ensure the safety of the public, Western Power crews will attend to these harzards first, before attempting to restore power.
Western Power urges people to stay clear of any downed or damaged powerlines and call on 13 13 51 if they are without power or see any hazards.
Crews in the country depots have also been kept busy today. A tree branch that fell over powerlines in Busselton cut power to 1500 properties earlier today. Western Power restored power to all but 70 properties while repairs to the local network are completed.
Currently Hester Brook (450 properties) and Mt Barker (180 properties) are the largest faults in the country.
