Restoration continues

Release Date: 22 May 2009

3pm update

Western Power crews continue work to restore power to homes across the metropolitan area and south west after yesterday's storms.  All planned work has been deferred and maintenance and contract crews have been diverted to power restoration work.

Western Power expects to restore power to most homes by 7pm tonight however, there are a significant number of single property faults that are likely to remain off overnight.  Crews will work through the night restoring power.

Western Power is asking customers who are aware that power has been restored to the neighbourhood but who still are without power, to call the fault line on 13 13 51.

At the height of the storm 62,000 properties were without power.

By 3am this morning Western Power had restored power to all but 4,000 homes that were affected by the storm yesterday.

Further power interruptions occurred when another front crossed the coast at 3.30am and 10am today.  Currently 4,900 customers are without power.

Most of the damage was caused by flying debris from homes and trees, hitting power lines.  Car crashes have also interrupted power.

More than 200 hazards were reported, mostly relating to fallen power lines.

Western Power understands the frustration that comes with power interruptions and asks customers to be patient while crews work to restore power.  The storm caused significant damage to electrical infrastructure across a large part of the metropolitan area and will take the remainder of today and potentially tomorrow to clean up.

Western Power crews worked throughout the night last night and will continue to do so tonight.

Any customer who has been without power for more than 12 hours can claim $80 through the Extended Outage Payment Scheme, details of how to claim can be found on Western Power's website.
