Regional students urged to apply for scholarship now
Release Date: 01 February 2009
Applications are closing in February for Western Power's regional tertiary Stuart Morgan Scholarship. The sought after scholarship provides assistance with university costs and offers paid vacation at Western Power for two lucky students from regional WA.
Students must be commencing university study in Perth in 2009 and have completed their schooling in regional WA.
Applications close on 6 February. The scholarship is awarded to two recipients, valued at $6300 per annum, to each student who is intending to study electrical/electronic or civil structural engineering and/or commerce.
Western Power's Scholarship organiser, Tanya Prince said the scholarship will assist regional students in relocating to Perth to study.
"By offering this scholarship, Western Power recognises and hopes to assist with some of the challenges faced by rural students wanting to achieve a tertiary education and experience the range of opportunities offered by university life," Tanya said.
2008 winner of the scholarship Elisha Clifton said that the Stuart Morgan Scholarship had allowed her to pursue her chosen degree and interests and allowed her to concentrate on her studies with fewer constraints.
"As one of the few scholarships for rural students it has assisted my move from Esperance to Perth for tertiary study".
"By accepting the opportunity for vacation work, I have met many new people, made contacts and networked with students, graduates and professionals. I have been challenged in my role and have acquired knowledge that I could not have gained simply by attending university. This will certainly be valuable when seeking future employment".
"With the scholarship, I know I am getting the most out of my degree".
The selection process will take into account academic performance and non-academic factors such as community involvement and practical experience.
The scholarship will be awarded at a special presentation held by Western Power in Perth in 2009.
