Girrawheen Senior High wins solar car challenge

The winner of the 18th annual Western Power Solar Model Car Challenge is Girrawheen Senior High School – Explora

The solar car challenge was held in Forrest Place in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, with the grand final raced at midday yesterday.

Girrawheen Senior High Schools was awarded as the WA Western Power Solar Model Car Challenge title holder after its Explora model car raced around the 100m figure eight track in a blistering time of 17.53 seconds.

Aquinas College (Nemphis Mensa) finished second followed by Winthrop Baptist College’s Solar Storm.  Guildford Grammar School’s GGS1 finished fourth.

The first three places have also won flights and accommodation for one teacher and two students to compete in the Australian-International competition on Nov 28 and 29 in Melbourne.

A total of 32 cars from 16 schools competed in the two-day event.

Since the challenge began in 1992, more than 4,000 secondary students have participated in the event, with over 700 solar-powered cars build for the occasion.

Solar Car Winners

1st place Girrawheen Senior High School 'Explora' with a time of 17.53 seconds - $500 cash prize, perpetual trophy, trophy, framed certificate and hydrogen fuel cell car
2nd place Aquinas College 'Nemphis Mensa' - trophy and framed certificate
3rd place Winthrop Baptist College 'Solar Storm' - trophy and framed certificate
4th place Guildford Grammar School 'GGS1' - trophy and framed certificate
Fastest qualifier Girrawheen Senior High School 'Explora' - framed certificate and $250 cash prize donated by Engineers Australia
Best poster Girrawheen Senior High School 'Horizon 3' (as judged by Scitech) - framed certificate and plasma ball with voice activation (donated by Scitech)
Most creative car Shenton College 'Emoticon' (used solar and wind powered propulsion instead of electrical) - framed certificate and hydrogen fuel cell car
