Easter power success for Denmark and Walpole

Release Date: 15 April 2009

Western Power recorded no significant power interruptions between Good Friday and Easter Monday, the peak tourist period for Denmark and Walpole.  This is a considerable improvement in reliability from previous years, and the result of substantial work done by Western Power and the communities in the area.

Western Power General Manager Customer Services, Mr Mark de Laeter said he was pleased with the result.

“A significant amount of work has gone into this area of the network to respond to the Easter and Winter peak electricity issues.

“Apart from network improvements and the medium and long term plans put in place for new infrastructure, Western Power has also been working on a program to help residents understand how their power use can have a huge impact during these periods.

“The Green Town project commenced in July 2008 as a pilot project, and was the first of its kind in the network.

“The aim is to combine energy efficiency education with CFL replacements, appliance surveys and local renewable energy generation to create a more energy efficient community.

“The project has an overall target of reducing peak demand by 10% by 2010, which is the equivalent to providing enough capacity for approximately 200 additional homes.  Alternatively, the reduction will help defer major network reinforcement.

“These initiatives have contributed to a relatively incident free weekend during one of the most important periods of the year for the community.

“It is important to remember, however, that power interruptions, beyond the control of Western Power, can still occur from a number of things including; car crashes, bushfires, lightning, storms, vegetation and animals,” Mr de Laeter said.

The only incident during the weekend occurred on Saturday when approximately 50 customers had their power interrupted after a local fuse blew, power was restored within an hour and a half.
